The Design Director establishes standards and best practices for the Design team and is responsible for the professional development of all team members. With oversight from the Company’s Merchants, the Design Director provides creative direction to identify seasonal assortments including color, material, design, and silhouette. In addition to managing the team and ensuring deadlines are met, the Design Director takes an active role in designing products that embody the Company’s creative vision and meet customer needs for comfort, style, functionality, and protection from the elements.
Collaborates with Merch team to identify seasonal big ideas and growth opportunities relevant to Sunday Afternoons.
Provides clear direction on execution of seasonal lines and presentation boards (sketches, color-ups, fabrics, trims).
Consistently innovates with team to drive new concepts and ideas, and successfully brings them to market on-time and within budget.
Leads and executes both company and cross-departmental initiatives, while seeking opportunities to positively affect teams and company.
Trains, motivates, and evaluates the Design team and manages employee growth and development as the business grows.
When needed, takes lead in Design presentations to Sales team.
Manages research of seasonal trends, including garnering samples and inspirational materials, to support seasonal direction established by Merchant.
Drives communication between teams to ensure strategic business alignment.
Creates new designs which meet all target requirements and/or product briefs submitted by Sales.
Creates and manages sketches, design forms, and CADs.
Presents concepts and illustrations professionally to Sales, Marketing, and other teams as necessary.
Assists with initial patterns and samples to ensure designs are executed according to design intent.
Participates in fit sessions to ensure garment fit is as specified in product brief.
Works collaboratively with Design, Development, and Production to ensure initial concepts are effectively and accurately brought through to end-product.
Provides clear direction and collaborates with materials team to select fabrics, trims, and other materials for new products.
Provides fit direction.
When needed, works with manufacturing facilities to ensure they are properly trained to manufacture products to design specifications.
Adheres to the Design/Development calendar.
Mentors the Design, Patternmaking, and Sewing teams as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Background:
At least 10 years of work experience in apparel design (or relevant experience), with at least 10 years of managerial experience, including mentoring team members for professional development.
Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in areas of Design, Merchandising, and/or Textiles.
Knowledge of industry trends and design principles, technical design/fit, and materials.
Leadership: Manages and inspires a team to create designs and products that are competitive with current market trends and company goals while attracting and developing talent by providing continuous mentoring and development.
Innovation: Demonstrates innovation and takes initiative in pursuing creative solutions to products and features.
Software: Proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Excel, and Word.
Problem Solving: Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully while remaining open to new challenges and ideas.
Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with an advanced ability to communicate new ideas, concepts and functional expertise within teams.

Teamwork: Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to inspire others while building effective working relationships.
